Tournament Spotlight: Autumn Classic

AutumnClassic_2014

San Diego’s Fall Tradition Is Back Again This October

The Autumn Classic is a NAGAAA sanctioned weekend tournament institution and this year’s 31st annual edition shouldn’t disappoint.  Some 70 teams will descend onto San Diego this coming Columbus Day Weekend to duke it out across three divisions.

Roman Jimenez, Open Co-Commissioner of the AFCSL & Autumn Classic Tournament Director is excited about this year’s tournament.  “The Autumn Classic is the third largest LGBT sporting event in the world and the largest adult two-day softball tournament on the West Coast of North America,” said Jimenez.

The Autumn Classic is rolling out its version of the red carpet by transporting tournament participants to the Opening Party from the host hotels via a limo bus.  The Opening Party will be held at Rich’s nightclub where American Idol star Keith London will entertain the masses. After registering at Rich’s all tourney participants will want to stop by Flicks on Friday night for the Cleats & Briefs contest where cash prizes and a free team tournament entry for 2015 will be up for grabs.

The tournament will be using four field complexes to accommodate this year’s large tournament field.  For round robin and double elimination play all D Division and B Division games will be played at Kit Carson and Poway complexes.  The C Division round robin and double elimination games will be split between Mt. San Miguel and Santee complexes.  One can imagine that with 70 teams it can be difficult to make things run smoothly, but tournament director Roman Jimenez isn’t worried.  “Even though we are a large tournament we are highly organized and run like a well-oiled machine.  We are constantly told by players from all across the country that we have an experience that’s unlike any other tournament in the U.S.,” said Jimenez.

Trophies will be handed out to the top three teams in each division at the field complexes, but that’s just part of what the trophy teams will walk away with.  In addition to trophies the third place team will receive hats, the second place team will receive t-shirts and the first place team in each division will receive jackets!  Each team will have a four game guarantee for the tournament and there will be two umpires for all trophy games in each division.  There are two host hotels for the tournament, the fabulous Doubletree Mission Valley and the historic Lafayette Hotel in North Park.

The competition should be fierce at this year’s Autumn Classic as half of the B Division teams participated at last month’s Dallas Series 2014.  Additionally, six more teams in the C & D Divisions also participated in the 2014 GSWS.  Speaking about the tournament in general, San Diego knows how to do a quality tournament and the 31st edition of the Autumn Classic should be one for the record books.

*Thank you to Roman Jimenez, AFCSL Co-Commissioner and Autumn Classic Tournament Director for his help with this article.*

The DD feels that if all variables remain stable that the LA Softball Cartel has the best shot at winning it all.  So much can happen in a 57 team tournament that this is a very loose championship prediction, but in any event LA takes the top spot for now.

GSWS Champion:     Knoxville Cyclones

With a 63 team D Division tournament it makes it VERY hard to select a winner.  However, the DD doesn’t have any problem putting the Cyclones of Knoxville out front and center as the team to beat in this year’s D Division tournament.  Obviously, it is difficult to say what teams will experience unfortunate circumstances or bad match ups in double elimination, but we believe that the Knoxville Cyclones if no problems occur has the best opportunity to win it all.

NAGAAA Summer Meetings Report

NAGAAALogo

Successful NAGAAA Summer Meetings Kick Off Series Week In Dallas

What a weekend here in Dallas!  The NAGAAA Summer Meetings got started at 8 am on Saturday morning and after a spirited Sunday morning session the meetings adjourned just before Noon central time today, September 21st.  As you can imagine coming into this tight-knit group of softball veterans it was a little intimidating for a newcomer like myself, but any apprehension I had been feeling quickly dissolved within a few minutes of walking into the meeting space at the Hilton Anatole.

These meetings were the first ever to allow official media to be present to document its happenings.  I am grateful to NAGAAA Assistant Commissioner James Williamson and to NAGAAA Member at Large Paula (P.C.) Cline for being so open to the idea of having media present and for their hospitality before and during the meetings.

The amount of openness, transparency and overall professionalism I saw this weekend was impressive. The welcoming attitude of the NAGAAA Executive Board, many of the delegates and interested onlookers was heartwarming.  It truly felt like a “family” atmosphere and while there were disagreements and different points of view there was always a sense of commitment to rules and regulations throughout the process.

After attending the meetings I would say to the national membership that you have people on the national, regional and local level that have the player experience as their main priority in everything that they do.  Nearly everything talked about in the meetings pertained to how we can make the product better overall and work better for the people who use it.  That was important for me personally as I not only write about and cover NAGAAA sanctioned events and leagues, but I am a proud league member, player and World Series participant.  At no point in the meetings did I ever feel like there were individuals trying to take over, talk over people or dismiss others points of view.  Everyone was validated and given a chance to speak their mind if they so desired.

The major highlights of the meetings included the C Division ratings threshold for team and player ratings were adjusted so that the new team rating cap in the C Division is 135 and the new C player rating cap is 14.  These changes will go into effect just like the lower threshold changes made at the Winter Meetings will, in 2015.  It is the belief of this writer that the delegation got this one right if for nothing else from a safety standpoint.  In my opinion, a player rated 11 has no business on the field in a like division game playing against or with a player rated 15.  This is an example of a decision that actually benefits the player experience.  By adjusting the upper threshold in the C Division it will continue to grow the B Division, which is a priority of NAGAAA, along with keeping a smaller gap between the lowest rated and highest rated players in a division.

Why is having a smaller ratings gap in a division important?  It’s important because it helps coaches and managers rate players more accurately and it improves the safety of the athletes by keeping players that are more alike in skill playing with one another.  We understand that in some leagues C Division teams will play D Division teams for scheduling purposes and that is that individual leagues responsibility to make sure they aren’t endangering their players by having those games on the schedule.  Another reason why it is important to keep the ratings gap per division lower is that it keeps the number of protests down.  While protests can be a money-maker for an organization, pervasive protesting is ultimately counterproductive to the overall goal and mission of the national body, which is to create the best player experience possible.

Another highlight of the meetings which is sure to create some buzz and controversy is the adoption of the Pick A Stick policy starting with the 2015 NAGAAA Cup and the 2015 GSWS.  The Pick A Stick program policy was used at the 2014 NAGAAA Cup in Phoenix, Arizona earlier this year and was a resounding success.  So, some of you might be reading this saying what the hell is a Pick A Stick?  Not to worry, you’re not dumb…it will most likely be a new concept for the majority of the national membership.  The easiest way to explain it goes like this…Pick A Stick is what will replace bat testing at major tournaments moving forward.  At the 2014 NAGAAA CUP there were 6 bats provided at different styles and weights to all teams.  The bats at this particular tournament were DeMarini bats, but NAGAAA is looking into using multiple bat manufacturers as the policy ramps up for 2015.  Each team essentially uses the same bats.  These bats are tested during the tournament and at night after games are over to make sure that the bats are still legally playable with all of the overuse they will get from the teams.  This policy will create a greater sense of fair play and can help with safety concerns brought on by “loaded” or illegal bats.  Obviously, the biggest drawback to this policy is that the $400 super bat you bought to feel like you have the equipment that you want or are comfortable with…..can’t be used.  Individual bats won’t go through a bat testing phase at all moving forward after this year’s GSWS because they can’t be used anyway.  It will be interesting to see the feedback either positive or negative on this policy moving forward.

Finally, the 2016 GSWS bid presentations were made on Saturday and voting occurred earlier this morning.  Reported first by the Diamond Dish on Facebook and later on Twitter, the Austin, TX bid beat out the San Diego, CA bid by a vote of 38-11.  In my opinion, Austin was the clear choice from the moment their delegation took the stage.  A truly professional outfit in every way, their group tapped into some of the concerns folks have had or might have with Austin and ran through each reason why they’re not an issue as it pertains to hosting a World Series.  Their supplemental documentation and presentation materials were first class and really helped to drive the point home that they were willing to do what was necessary to host a first class event.  This was a BIG decision for the national delegation as the 2016 World Series will be the 40th Annual GSWS.  While Austin was the clear choice I would caution their delegation and GSWS host committee to think outside of the box and make the actual event as over the top and detailed as their presentation was.  The presentation is the easiest part of the process and that just ended…now the hard work begins.  To wrap up this topic, there was a smattering of support for the San Diego bid and while San Diego hit on their perfect weather and the fact that a World Series hasn’t been on the West Coast since 2008 the presentation wasn’t on the same level as what I had seen from the Austin group right before them.

To start the speculation for 2017 GSWS Bids, it looks like there will be several West Coast bids up for the choosing at next year’s Summer Meetings in Columbus.  If a West Coast city wins in Columbus for the 2017 Series bid it will be 9 years in between West Coast cities hosting the Series which will be the longest drought in the history of the GSWS.

Many other decisions were made, but I chose those three issues regarding ratings, bats and 2016 Series to discuss in this article because I feel they impact the national membership the most out of everything decided on and discussed this weekend.

More specific and in-depth articles will be coming your way here on the Diamond Dish all week-long.  My goal is to get at least two to three separate posts up per day moving forward with live tweets giving you info right from the fields as well.  Here’s to an unbelievable set of meetings and what is sure to be an even better week of competition.  If you’re in Dallas already, go enjoy Dallas PRIDE events this evening and to all of you traveling today and tomorrow, get here safely!

Monthly League Spotlight: Pegasus Slowpitch Softball Association

1625560_678046465585744_2099441213_nThe Dallas PSSA: A Shining Star for Texas Softball

The state of Texas is massive in size and population.  Precisely speaking the state is 2nd in land area behind Alaska and 2nd in population behind California.  With that being said Texans don’t take a backseat to anyone and Dallas’ Pegasus Slowpitch Softball Association doesn’t either.

The PSSA is enjoying its 33rd year of softball in the Dallas metroplex area and its 31st year associated with NAGAAA.  Routinely one of the larger leagues in terms of membership in North America, this year’s edition of the PSSA had 28 teams competing across four divisions.  The intense heat the Dallas area experiences in the late Summer months forces the regular season to run from March to June with games being contested at Kiest Park, a 2014 World Series complex.

Johnny Russell is in his 10th year as the PSSA Commissioner and his inclusive attitude has allowed the Dallas-based league to grow.  “We have a place for everyone because we have more than 400 members and have 4 competitive divisions.  We can find a place for anyone that wants to play,” said Russell.

The 2014 Gay Softball World Series is dominating everyone’s thinking and motivation as we are less than two weeks away from the GSWS Opening Ceremonies in Dallas and the hometown teams representing the PSSA this September know that this isn’t any ordinary World Series.  “We are all very excited about hosting for the third time,” said Russell.  During the World Series festivities a highlight of the week is always the NAGAAA Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony, which Russell will be inducted at with fellow Dallas representative Greg Smith.

In an attempt to strengthen fair play and give everyone in their league a fair chance to play the PSSA ran an E division schedule this season.  Dallas joined Houston, Columbus, Atlanta, Portland and several other leagues and tournaments in creating a separate lower division to enhance their members’ playing experience.  “I have no problem with an E division or recreational division in home leagues or in NAGAAA,” Russell stated.

The city of Dallas will be on an international stage in just a few days during Dallas Series 2014 and the PSSA wants to do something that is extremely hard to do, win a Series championship in your hometown city.  Only two times in the modern era of NAGAAA (1992 – present) has a team playing at a Series in its hometown won it all, the 2008 D division champs the Seattle Atomic and the 1999 B division champs the Kansas City Dixie Belle Sharps.  The qualified teams out of the PSSA will try to write their names into the NAGAAA history books at their hometown World Series this September.

Tournament Spotlight: Sacramento Camellia Softball Tournament

10312629_654160914656548_5933206617035227895_n

SVGLS Gives Back to Community With 3rd SCSC

Giving back is something that everyone can get behind and the Sacramento Valley Gay & Lesbian Softball League is using its 3rd Annual Sacramento Camellia Softball Classic to do just that.

All proceeds from the 28 team tournament will go to local Sacramento charities.  Tournament co-directors Rian Troth and Augie Garcia want everyone to know what this event is all about.  “Most importantly this is a charity tournament, so any proceeds we make we give back to the community.  This year we are giving to Loaves and Fishes Mustard Seed School which serves homeless youth, and we’re also doing a backpack and school supply drive for low-income students in our area,” said Troth.

Teams can look forward to an opening night party on Friday at Badlands.  Registration will take place there along with drink specials, entertainment and raffles!  The closing ceremonies and party will be held at Faces Night Club.  Trophies will be awarded at closing ceremonies to the top four teams in the D division and the top 3 teams in the C division.  In addition to trophies, all teams will get a plaque with a team picture too!  The tournament is guaranteeing four games per team along with two umpires per championship game.

The host hotel for the tournament is the Residence Inn by Marriott and the games will be played at the Watt Avenue Softball Complex all weekend long.  Other sponsors for the tournament include Bolt, Live Well Real Estate and several other smaller contributors.

Northern California in August seems like a dream this time of year and the SCSC will be making many dreams come true for Sacramento youth through their charity tournament this weekend.

*Thanks to SCSC co-tournament directors Rian Troth and Augie Garcia for their help with this tournament spotlight article.*

Tournament Spotlight: Detroit M.I.S.T.

1507593_821113964584336_3742554522836890497_n

Detroit Offers Up the 29th Midwest Invitational Softball Tournament

If anyone is looking for an alternative to the NAGAAA business as usual you can take a trip to Detroit this weekend to check out the 29th Annual Midwest Invitational Softball Tournament!  With 41 teams making up this year’s tournament field the competition will be outstanding over Labor Day weekend.

Bill Peters is the co-director of this year’s tournament and he thinks that the yearly tournament location changes and the opportunity to create allies outside of the gay community is a game changer for the M.I.S.T.  “The tournament rotates between Detroit, Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati each year.  The M.I.S.T has been open to LGBT and allied teams since its beginning.  One of the draws is that we play with our straight friends and allies,” said Peters.

There is always a bit of competition between the rotating host cities as to who can put on the best tournament and Detroit is definitely stepping up to the plate this year.  The host hotel is the Detroit Marriott-Livonia where the Friday night check in and hospitality party will take place.  The tournament will be providing free food and beverage at the party from 5 pm to 11 pm.  The games will be played at the Canton Sports Center in nearby Canton, Michigan with an awards ceremony on Sunday after the championship games at the host hotel.  A closing party will be held at Necto in Ann Arbor, Michigan to help wind down the Labor Day weekend.  The tournament is providing buses to shuttle tournament goers to the club in Ann Arbor on Sunday.

The Detroit based tournament will be guaranteeing five games per team and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in each division.  The major difference for folks that normally participate in NAGAAA tournaments is that the M.I.S.T. uses USSSA rules and does not work off the NAGAAA ratings model.  “Detroit’s LGBT softball league and M.I.S.T. are not affiliated with NAGAAA,” said Bill Peters, M.I.S.T. co-director.

Main sponsors of the event include the Metro Detroit LGBT Softball League, Otha Williams Allstate Insurance, Dr. Glenn Spencer DDS, Hayloft Saloon, Menjo’s, Necto, Malebox II and the Motown Invitational Classic.  There are an additional 30 plus MVP and Patron sponsors that have also contributed to help put on the tournament.

Good luck to Detroit on what is sure to be an ever-growing tournament as it rotates across the Midwestern United States in the years to come.

*Thanks to Bill Peters, M.I.S.T. co-director for his help with this tournament spotlight article.*

Tournament Spotlight: Dairyland Classic

DLC2014

Milwaukee’s Brewing Up Fun & Softball Over Labor Day Weekend

The site of the first ever Gay Softball World Series and the 2009 GSWS host city, Milwaukee is no stranger to putting on big time tournaments and the 2014 Dairyland Classic looks to be another great tournament to add in the softball history books of “Brew Town”.

The current edition of the Dairyland Classic boasts a 24 team field in C Competitive, C Recreational and D divisions.  The awesome tournament team field will be treated a huge opening party at the host hotel, Doubletree – Downtown Milwaukee on Friday night.  The tournament will be contested at Wirth Park, sight of the 2009 GSWS Championship Sunday games and to finish off the tournament weekend there will be a closing party with tournament trophy presentation on Sunday night at La Cage Nite Club!

The Dairyland Classic will be guaranteeing teams 5 games per team and trophies will be awarded to the top 3 teams in each division.  Brian Reinkober is the co-tournament director of the 2014 Dairyland Classic and he thinks that it all comes down to the little things when putting together a successful tournament.  “We pay attention to the littlest of details.  We also provide each team with a sign that they can hang at the fields so that everyone knows where that team is from,” said Reinkober.

Local Milwaukee weather shows a few rain showers in the forecast, but don’t count on anything raining on this Wisconsin gay softball parade over Labor Day weekend.
